Assisting with the Mass

Liturgical ministries help make the celebration of Mass prayerful, reverent, and meaningful for the entire parish. From proclaiming God’s Word as a lector, assisting at the altar as a server or sacristan, to distributing the Eucharist as an Extraordinary Minister, these ministries allow parishioners to serve God and the community in a deeply personal and impactful way. Each role requires preparation, prayer, and a heart open to serving Christ and His Church.

Sacristans

Sacristans prepare for and clean up after Mass, setting up for the Liturgy of the Word and Liturgy of the Eucharist, including books, vessels, offertory, and incense when needed. They assist the presider, ensure altar servers, lectors, and key ministers are ready, and help everything run smoothly. Time commitment is typically about a half-hour before and after Mass, serving once or twice a month depending on scheduling. Email Don DeWeese to learn more.

Lectors

Lectors have the important role of proclaiming the Word of God during Mass, helping the assembly hear and encounter Scripture as alive and transformative. Those who serve in this ministry are encouraged to prayerfully prepare, practice, and reflect on the readings so they can proclaim them with clarity and reverence. Participants must have received the sacrament of Confirmation. For more information, call or email Donna Waggoner.

Altar Servers

Altar servers, who have received First Holy Communion, assist the priest during Mass. Teen and adult participation is encouraged. Duties may include carrying the cross or candles in the procession, holding the book for the priest, presenting gifts, handling incense, washing the priest’s hands, and assisting as needed. New servers attend an annual training class.
